The Washington Commanders and architecture firm HKS have unveiled conceptual renderings for a new roofed stadium.
The $3.7-billion project, which would rise on the RFK Stadium site in Hill East, would be able to accommodate up to 70,000 spectators, and is expected to spur development in the surrounding area.
"We are proud to share the first visuals of our future stadium, a defining milestone in the next phase of the development process," said Commanders president Mark Clouse in a statement. "This moment underscores the strength of our partnership with HKS, whose thoughtful, forward-looking approach has helped us shape a concept that is worthy of its extraordinary site along DC's Monumental Axis and truly embodies the spirit and character of the District. We are deeply grateful to the District and the Mayor for their leadership, collaboration, and continued support, which have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
The design is described as being aligned with the L'Enfant Plan, and would expand on waterfront park space with new plazas and green spaces. At least 30 percent of the site is to be dedicated to active and passive recreation. The stadium is intended to link Washington's historic core with the Anacostia river, and draws inspiration from the design of RFK stadium.
Construction is to be completed in 2030.
