Construction commenced last week for Hillsdale Flats Phase I, the third component of the Barry Farm redevelopment at 1200 Sumner Road SE in the Anacostia neighborhood.
“This first phase of Hillsdale Flats marks a powerful step forward in one of the District’s most transformative redevelopment efforts,” said Deputy Mayor Nina Albert in a news release. “These 90 affordable homes build on more than $1 billion invested in Ward 8 under the Bowser Administration and reflect our commitment to creating opportunity, strengthening neighborhoods, and honoring this community’s legacy.”
The project, which will be located on a 1.35-acre site between Sumner Road SE, Wade Road SE, Eaton Road SE and Firth Sterling Ave SE, calls for the construction of nine three-story buildings containing 90 homes in a mix of one-, two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom plans. Units are to be reserved for renters earning up to 80 percent of the area median income level, including 42 for former Barry Farm residents.
The initial two buildings of the Barry Farms site total nearly 250 homes. The completed development is expected to include at least 900 residential units, with 380 replacement units for former Barry Farm residents.
The project is being developed by Preservation of Affordable Housing.
Founded in 1867, Barry Farm-Hillsdale was Washington, D.C.’s first homeownership community designated for newly freed African Americans. The existing public housing complex was developed in the 1940s.
