Since 2016, plans to build a hotel at 923-927 5TH Street NW have been circulating. A new submission to the DC historic preservation review board (HPRB) shows these plans are still in motion.

Currently, the site is occupied by the vacant Union Provision and Distribution Company building, built in 1946. Historic polychrome panels adorn the front facade reading “Director’s Deli – Deliciously Different Corned Beef.” Over the years, several design submissions have come across the HPRB’s desk showing different ways the building could be restored while incorporating a new hotel or condo construction.

The newest submission is most similar to the original approved design from 2018. The developer, Kline Operations, is no longer pursuing the more substantial design requests from 2021. FILLAT+ Architecture has been chosen to design the project.

The proposed hotel aims to incorporate the historic concrete panels and restore its long faded lettering. Renderings show an 11-story Aloft hotel with a rooftop deck, and restored deli on the ground level.
