Almost 2 years after acquiring the former Tastee Diner property, Roadside Development has received planning board approval to build a mixed use tower in its place.

The Diner located at 8676 Georgia Avenue was a staple in Silver Spring for nearly 80 years until it closed in March 2023. Soon after, Roadside Development unveiled their plans to build a residential-over-retail tower that would incorporate the historic restaurant.

The proposal encompasses a gross floor area of up to 550,000 square feet across 27-30 stories. This includes up to 525 units of multifamily residences, with 15% of them being moderately-priced dwelling units. Additionally, the proposal allows for up to 25,000 square feet of retail or service establishment uses on the ground floor.

Designed by Bonstra Haresign Architects, the tower is meant to fit harmoniously with the rest of Silver Spring’s skyline, and ensure the diner is featured prominently.

The Historic Preservation Commission previously approved the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Historic Tastee Diner, as well as the demolition of the non-historic former bank on the property. Now that Roadside has been green-lighted by the Planning Board, they can continue the next steps in the approval processes.
